1. Invest in a wireless thermostat. Never have to worry if you forgot to turn the thermostat down. And if winter brings a nasty cold snap while you’re away, you can adjust the temperature in your home to ensure your pipes are nice and warm and not at risk of freezing and or bursting. An added bonus is that you can raise the temperature while you’re travelling back so that your home is the perfect temperature when you arrive.
2. Plan for snow. Chances are it could snow while you’re away. You’ll want to make arrangements to have someone (a neighbor or hired hand) clear all walkways and driveways on your property.
3. Ask a neighbor for help. Even if you have a home surveillance system, it’s still good to have someone in the neighborhood who will look in on your home on a regular basis and check that nothing’s amiss.
4. Leave a light on (sometimes). A home that remains dark 24/7 can be an invitation to observant burglars. Rather than wasting energy by leaving a light on all the time, set a couple of your indoor lights on timers and install motion sensors on your outdoor lights to provide some security without adding too much to your energy bill.

Here are some changes that can affect your fuel usage:

• More people in the household. Perhaps you had kids away in school that are home for the winter holiday. Or perhaps a friend or family member is now living with you long-term.
• More time spent in the home. Especially because of Covid, more people are spending more hours in the home because they’re working from home, attending classes virtually, and just generally spending less time in other venues. More time indoors during the winter means keeping your home warm for more hours of the day. Perhaps you’re eating out less and cooking more. That will also increase your propane usage.
• Getting away from it all. If you’ve decided to leave town for an extended period of time to get away from it all, that will decrease your propane usage for a season.
