Propane Safety Reminders for the Winter

An important checklist

Winter has already hit parts of Central and Western New York hard. Because Irish Propane cares about your safety and our ability to safely and reliably deliver for you, here are a few important reminders for the season—especially in the days before, during, and following a storm.

Here are six ways to help keep your family (and the Irish Propane delivery and service crew) safe this season:

  1. Keep the path to your propane tank clear. Regularly remove any snow or ice that may have accumulated so that it’s always easy to reach your tank for maintenance, gas level monitoring, and refilling.
  2. Make your propane tank easy to spot even after a heavy snow or during low visibility conditions by attaching a bright flag to the top of it. You’ll be helping our delivery crew find your tank (even in bad weather) and to safely position their delivery trucks.
  3. Keep your propane tank free of snow and ice. One you’ve cleared a safe path to your propane tank, use a broom to clean snow and ice off the tank itself. Don’t use a shovel for this. A shovel could puncture your tank and lead to a propane gas leak.
  4. Regularly check your vents and flues for obstructions. This important safety step will help prevent a build-up of carbon monoxide in your home. Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas that can lead to serious medical emergencies. So, you should also test your carbon monoxide detectors monthly and replace the batteries about every six months. And if your carbon monoxide detector is 7 years or older, it’s time to replace it.
  5. Carefully monitor your propane level. The colder it gets, the more often you should check your fuel levels because your usage can change dramatically. Call Irish Propane before your tank is less than ¼ full. Our experienced delivery team will be sure to get you the propane you need any time, any day, and in any weather.
  6. Know what to do if there’s a leak. Make sure everyone in your family knows what to do if they think there’s a gas leak. Hint: It will smell like rotten eggs. Click here for instructions on what to do.

Leaving Town This Winter? Protect Your Home

Have a worry-free vacation

At Irish Propane, we know how to get the job done. When you take a break from your job, we want you to be able to vacation worry-free. If you’re planning on heading out of town this winter and leaving your Rochester or Buffalo, New York, home behind, make sure you take a few steps to safeguard it.

Pre-Travel Checklist

Technology makes it possible for you to keep an eye on and have control over your home even when you’re far, far away. So whether you’re off skiing, snorkeling, or shopping ‘till you drop, you can rest assured that everything is going well with your home. Here are some ways to protect your home while you’re out of town.

  1. Invest in a wireless thermostat. Never have to worry if you forgot to turn the thermostat down. And if winter brings a nasty cold snap while you’re away, you can adjust the temperature in your home to ensure your pipes are nice and warm and not at risk of freezing and or bursting. An added bonus is that you can raise the temperature while you’re travelling back so that your home is the perfect temperature when you arrive.
  2. Plan for snow. Chances are it could snow while you’re away. You’ll want to make arrangements to have someone (a neighbor or hired hand) clear all walkways and driveways on your property.
  3. Ask a neighbor for help. Even if you have a home surveillance system, it’s still good to have someone in the neighborhood who will look in on your home on a regular basis and check that nothing’s amiss.
  4. Leave a light on (sometimes). A home that remains dark 24/7 can be an invitation to observant burglars. Rather than wasting energy by leaving a light on all the time, set a couple of your indoor lights on timers and install motion sensors on your outdoor lights to provide some security without adding too much to your energy bill.
  5. Check your propane supply. Call Irish Propane for a propane delivery before you head out of town so that you’ll be sure to have enough when you get back from your travels. You’ll appreciate having one less thing to worry about post-vacation.

Automatic Delivery Customers: Keep Us in the Loop

Let us know when there are changes in your household

Someone once said that the only constant is change. And while someone else said that the more things change the more they stay the same, that’s not true when it comes to your propane usage. Even a modest change in your home and habits can have a noticeable effect on your fuel usage

Change is something we’ve all had to get even more used to during the past two years. How we celebrate, work, study, and consume entertainment have all changed because of Covid-19. There are changes to your household you may be taking for granted, but at Irish Propane, we hope you’ll take the time to keep up in the loop of those changes so we can adjust your automatic propane delivery schedule accordingly.

Here are some changes that can affect your fuel usage:

  • More people in the household. Perhaps you had kids away in school that are home for the winter holiday. Or perhaps a friend or family member is now living with you long-term.
  • More time spent in the home. Especially because of Covid, more people are spending more hours in the home because they’re working from home, attending classes virtually, and just generally spending less time in other venues. More time indoors during the winter means keeping your home warm for more hours of the day. Perhaps you’re eating out less and cooking more. That will also increase your propane usage.
  • Getting away from it all. If you’ve decided to leave town for an extended period of time to get away from it all, that will decrease your propane usage for a season.

Keeping us in the know gets you the best service

Whenever there are changes in your home and habits (whether due to the pandemic or something else), please let us at Irish Propane know—especially if you’re an automatic delivery customer. Keeping us in the loop is important because any number of changes can impact your propane usage in comparison to years past. We can serve you better if we have as accurate as possible a picture of your changing propane needs.

There are a lot of factors we take into account when determining your delivery schedule. First and foremost, we consider current and upcoming weather conditions as well as your prior heating oil usage. If your propane usage changes, that’s something we need to factor into our scheduling process.

Perhaps change is a constant, but Irish Propane is tried and true. We are a fourth-generation, family owned, and certified women’s business enterprise that delivers quality propane to homes in central and western New York. We’re also committed to offering fair and honest pricing. That’s something that will never change.

Propane: There’s So Much It Can Do!

Residential Propane Uses

In addition to being eco-friendly, readily available, safe, and efficient, propane is extremely versatile. There are a lot of residential uses for propane that you can benefit from in your central or western New York home.

Useful Propane Products

Propane can do a lot around the house. It can power almost any appliance and keep your family warm. Here are just a few of the propane products that can help improve the quality of life in your home this winter:

  1. Propane fireplaces: A propane fireplace offers warmth and ambiance with the click of a button. You get the beauty of a wood fire without any of the headaches. There’s no set-up, wood to buy or chop, or soot and ash to clean up. Propane fireplaces are also up to 6 times more efficient than wood-burning fireplaces, cost less in maintenance, and can act as a primary heat source during a power outage.
  2. Water heaters: A high-efficiency propane water heater costs up to 30% less in operation costs than an electric heater. Propane water heaters also have a recovery rate that’s nearly twice as fast. No matter how big your family gets or how many overnight guests you have to host, never worry about running out of hot water again—especially if you choose a propane tankless water heater.
  3. Space heaters: A thermostat-controlled direct-vent or vent-free propane space heater provides localized warmth and is safe, easy to install, and very efficient. It will also produce fewer pollutants and harmful emissions than a fuel oil space heater.
  4. Backup generators: A backup generator can provide security, comfort, and peace of mind. Extreme weather events are becoming increasingly common, as are the power outages that often accompany them. A whole-house propane generator can help keep your household up and running and your family safe and comfortable.

There are a lot of ways to use propane in and around your home, but there’s only one source you should turn to for your propane delivery. Irish Propane is a fourth-generation, family-owned, and certified women’s business enterprise that delivers quality propane to homes in central and western New York. Propane Is an Alternative Fuel

The Environmental Benefits of Propane

As an alternative fuel, propane has a lot to offer your central or western New York home or business. Propane is extremely versatile, safe, and efficient. Using propane as a source of energy also has environmental benefits. Let’s explore what makes propane so eco-friendly.

Less Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Compared to electricity, propane produces up to 50% less in greenhouse gas emissions. This makes sense when you consider that more than 40% of the electricity used in the US is generated by coal-fired power plants. In fact, electricity is second only to transportation in terms of greenhouse gas emissions in America. In addition, coal-fired plants produce pollution that causes smog and acid rain. By comparison, propane produces significantly less emissions when burned.

Safe & Clean

Consider all the harm done to the environment when there’s an oil spill. Unlike in the case of gasoline, traditional heating oil, and diesel fuel, a propane spill doesn’t cause damage to the environment. Instead of polluting the air, water, and soil or causing damage to the surrounding plant, marine, or aquatic life, it simply evaporates.

Energy Efficiency

The environment benefits whenever you can find a way to use less energy. That’s possible with propane. When you consider the energy used in the extraction, processing, and transportation to its point of use of propane versus electricity, propane is 87% efficient while electricity is only 32% efficient.

Commercial Uses

Propane Autogas is a popular choice for high mileage vehicle fleets like school buses and police cars. Warehouses around the country are also choosing propane-powered forklifts. Propane is also a great source of heat for construction sites because it works fast and offers efficiency, versatility, and safety.

Propane has a lot to offer your New York home or business. And if you live or work in western or central New York, you should turn to Irish Propane for all propane delivery needs. Our fourth-generation, family-owned, certified women’s enterprise serves both residential and commercial customers.

If you’re looking for a reliable propane supplier in or around the Rochester or Buffalo areas of New York, choose Irish Propane. Contact us today to schedule your next propane delivery or learn more about our convenient payment plans.

Propane: An Important Part of America’s Energy Solution

There’s so much propane can do

If you’re looking for a versatile energy source, look no further than propane. It can do a lot for your central or western New York home. Propane is an important part of America’s energy solution because it is versatile, eco-friendly, readily available, safe, and efficient.

The versatility of propane

Sure, propane can heat your home, but it can do a lot more than that. Propane is also a safe and efficient way to power your indoor and outdoor appliances. Propane isn’t just for residential use. It also has a lot of commercial applications. Warehouses and factories use it as an economical source of heat. Because propane has low, nontoxic emissions, it’s also used for indoor forklifts, torches, and welders. And since propane is produced right here in the US or Canada, it’s in abundant supply and not susceptible to foreign conflicts.

There’s a lot propane can do for your New York home. Here are a even more reasons it’s an important part of America’s energy solution:

Propane is eco-friendly

Compared to other fuels, propane is one of the cleanest burning. If you compare an all-electric home to one that uses propane for heating, the propane home will produce up to 30% less in carbon emissions. A home that uses propane for heating, water heating, cooking, clothes drying, and space heating will produce up to 50% less in carbon emissions than an all-electric house.

Additionally, in the rare event of a leak, propane doesn’t pose a danger to the environment. It doesn’t harm the air, soil, water, plants, or water-based organisms. It just dissipates.

Propane is readily available

America has an abundant supply of propane because the majority of propane is produced domestically. Our country’s supply of propane is so abundant, the US is able to export roughly 10 gallons of propane each year. Your home will always have uninterrupted access to propane because it can be easily stored in a tank on your property. Unlike natural gas customers, when you use propane, you’re never at the mercy of a utility and its potential infrastructure problems.

Propane is safe

There’s little to worry about with propane. There are strict guidelines for propane handling that are enforced by the National Fire Protection Association. As a result, propane has always had a strong safety record. Propane is not as combustible as other fuels. It’s also nontoxic.

Propane is efficient

Propane appliances give you more for your money as compared to their electric counterparts because they operate more efficiently. By switching to propane, you’ll see a reduction in your energy costs. Current-day propane heating systems are capable of up to 98% efficiency. Propane water heaters get the job done faster than electric water heaters. The same is true of propane clothes dryers. (They also generate less static.)

There are a lot of reasons to choose propane for your home. And, if you live in western and central New York, you need look no farther than Irish Propane for residential propane delivery. We also refill and dispose of propane cylinders.

If you’re looking for a reliable propane supplier in or around the Rochester or Buffalo areas of New York, choose Irish Propane. Contact us today to schedule your next propane delivery and ask about our convenient payment plans.

Propane vs. Electricity for Your Home

A look at how they stack up against each other

why propane new yorkLately, there’s been a lot of talk about the electrification movement—the push to use only electric-powered home equipment. A lot of municipalities are trying to bring about the complete electrification of homes. Quite often, the goal is combatting climate change. However, while being environmentally conscious is a great goal, electrification is not the perfect solution that some would have you think it is. When making decisions for your Central or Western New York home, you should consider all the pros and cons of propane versus electricity.

Electricity gets a lot of buzz, but there are lots of reasons propane may be the better choice for your New York home. Here are eight ways propane out-performs electricity:

  1. Propane saves you money. Appliances that run on propane are extremely efficient and so cost less to operate. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save $174 a year just by using a propane water heater instead of an electric one. Overall, propane water heaters can cost between 30%-50% less to operate than their electric counterparts.
  2. Propane is very versatile. Propane can do more than warm your home. It can also power appliances like your oven, clothes dryer, and water heater. Propane is also useful for outdoor appliances such as grills, pool heaters, and patio heaters.
  3. Propane is reliable. When extreme weather (or any other event) causes the electric grid to fail, your access to propane won’t be affected. Propane can keep your generator running. And a whole-house generator can keep your whole home up and running (from your HVAC equipment to your security system to all the electronic devices you want to have charged).
  4. Propane is easy to store. Propane doesn’t degrade over time and propane tanks require very little maintenance and offer a lot of longevity. You can keep one in storage for up to 40 years! And when you’re ready to dispose of your propane tanks, bring them to Irish Propane. For a small fee, we will dispose of your used propane tanks for you according to all of New York State’s regulations for recycling and waste disposal.
  5. Propane is wherever you need it. Using electricity can get expensive. However, Irish Propane offers reliable propane delivery and fair and honest propane gas prices. Regardless of weather or market conditions, rest assured that we’ll keep you supplied with all the propane you need at a competitive price.
  6. Propane gets the job done quickly. Propane water heaters work faster than their electric counterparts. A propane water heater can produce twice the volume of hot water as an electric heater in the same time span. Propane clothes dryers can dry your laundry 25% faster than electric dryers and cause less static. Propane space heaters are also significantly more efficient than electric heaters.
  7. Propane is greener than you think. Propane water heaters produce roughly half the carbon emissions of electric water heaters with a storage tank. In fact, because most of the US electricity supply comes from coal-burning power plants, electricity is the second-largest greenhouse gas source in America (only transportation ranks higher).
  8. Propane offers longevity. The average lifespan of a propane gas furnace is 20 years. For an electric heat pump, it’s just 14 years.

There are a lot of reasons to choose propane for your home, and the professionals at Irish Propane dependably deliver propane to our customers in and around Buffalo and Rochester, New York. We also refill and dispose of propane cylinders.

Is Your Home’s Fuel Tank Running Empty?

Tips for Never Getting Caught With an Empty Propane Tank

Winter is approaching, and you want to be sure that you and your family will be comfortable and warm in your Central or Western New York home when the temperature drops. You don’t want to get caught without the propane your heater needs to heat your home. Do you know how to tell if your tank is full, empty, or somewhere in between?

The most reliable way to tell how much propane you have is to check your tank’s gauge. Some tanks come with a pre-installed gauge. You can also buy a gauge and install it yourself. Here are some things to know before you try to read your propane tank’s gauge.

Step 1: Locate Your Tank.

If you have an above-ground tank, it’s pretty hard to miss. You probably know where it is, but if not, just take a walk around your property. You’ll find it. Underground tanks can be trickier to find. Look for a small plastic dome. It will be a minimum of 10 feet away from your home and any other structure. Underneath the dome you’ll find the gauge for your tank. Now you’re ready to read it.

Step 2: Read the Gauge.

Most above ground and underground propane tanks use a float gauge system. Don’t worry, these types of gauges aren’t difficult to read. When you check the gauge, you’ll see a number between 10 and 80. That number represents a percentage. For example, if the dial reads 40, you have approximately 40% of a tank left of propane. If you know your tank’s capacity, you can calculate the number of gallons than percentage represents. If you’re really on top of things, you know your weekly propane usage and can calculate how long your current supply will last. Just remember, you never want your tank to completely run out of propane!

Step 3: Know When to Order More Propane.

It’s important never to let your tank get completely empty. When your propane levels get too low, air can get into your heating system. You’ll need professionals restart your tank if it ever runs out. And having air in your heating system can lead to expensive damage. As a general rule, you don’t want your tank’s propane level to go below 20%. Just keep in mind that your gauge isn’t fool-proof or perfectly accurate, so it’s always better to air on the side of caution and stay vigilant.

If Your Propane Tank Is Empty…

If you do find yourself with an empty propane tank, call the professionals at Irish Propane. We’ll get you back up and running in no time. We are available all day every day of the week and come through for our customers no matter how bad the weather gets.

The pros at Irish Propane are faithfully serving our customers in and around Buffalo and Rochester, New York. Irish Propane is proudly a certified women-owned business enterprise. Join our family of happy customers and let us take care of all your propane delivery needs.

How To Dispose Of a Propane Tank

As you start to tackle your fall household cleaning tasks, you may find that your stash of 20- or 40-pound propane tanks has grown after a full season of grilling (a great sign that you enjoyed your summer!).

If you have empty propane tanks sitting around your backyard (never inside your home, we hope), it’s a good idea to have them refilled or recycled before winter sets in. Remember: discarding propane cylinders with your regular trash is dangerous – and illegal in New York State!

While you may find some private recycling companies that will take your old single use or refillable propane grill cylinders, the easiest and safest way to handle propane tank disposal in the Buffalo and Rochester area is to bring your propane tank to one of our convenient locations and let us do it for you.

When transporting your tank, please observe the following propane safety procedures:

  • Keep your propane tank well-ventilated inside your vehicle
  • Always transport your propane tank upright (with the valve at the top)
  • Close the valve by turning it clockwise; if you have a valve cap, use it
  • Take your propane tank directly to the refilling location
  • Do not leave your propane tank unaccompanied in the vehicle

If you need your propane tank re-certified (which is required once your tank reaches its tenth year in use and every five years after that), we can do that, too. To check your propane tank’s certification date, look for a metal collar at the top of the tank, near the valve; the date should be stamped into the collar.

Dispose of your propane barbecue cylinder properly by bringing it to a convenient Irish Propane location!

Contact us to learn more – or just stop by with your old tank!
